在戈登之后，托伯特加入了美国陆军，服役22年。 After his retirement in 1991, he joined Atlanta Public Schools where he served as a JROTC instructor, deputy director for JROTC and director for JROTC for 20 years. Torbert currently works part-time with the US Army as the leadership program manager for the US Army JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl.
托伯特与结婚51年的妻子玛格丽特住在乔治亚州的玛丽埃塔。 With three sons and 10 grandchildren, he enjoys spending his free time being physically active, camping or doing volunteer work with the Military Officers Association of America. 托伯特还喜欢回馈那些正在追求高等教育的年轻人，他为亚特兰大都会区高中和拉马尔县高中的JROTC学生组织和管理奖学金。
